Some Dorc-ery in ballpoint pen with some light pencil shading --- a painful lesson on the wisdom of chasing a dryad back to her tree.
Yup. I tried to keep it clean and simple, but it got a little Freudian.

Another fairly recent one -- a reckless scribble of a pit fiend (something new). Too cartoon-y for me, so maybe I'll have another go at it.

My my my, we just loooove to hear ourselves don't we?
Awesome stuff squeen.

Have you ever given thought to coloring/shading via digital tools, or would that just step on the "homemade" look you're going for?

Thanks DP. I do use GIMP quite a lot actually, to clean up the scanned image and fix mistakes.

I struggled for what felt like a long time trying to determine what style of D&D art I wanted to produce. Ultimately, I decided it would be pen and ink, with solely careful hatching to shade. It's the pre-lithographic-printing "wood cut style" I think Trampier (un)consciously selected because it evokes a medieval time period---and it pleases my eye especially in this heavily digital-paint era. I also think it is one of the hardest styles to pull off, and I enjoy the challenge.

That said, quite often I get lazy and just pencil-shade (or digitally), with all the "painterly" levels of grey that affords. I am red-green color blind, so I need to steer clear of full-color.

Peter Mullen is the modern RPG artist I admire the most. He's truly mastered pen & ink shading and texturing. Historically: Booth, Wrightson, Frazetta, Williamson, Raymond, Dore, and Tramp all inspire.

That's where my head is at for now, but it's a long road so who knows.

A quick master-study with all my bad habits overlaid upon Mark Schultz's brilliance with beauty and beast.

That is the most limp-wristed attack I've ever seen.

Jokes aside, I like it. A bit busy in the dark spots for my eyes though.

Thank you. It has some pleasing spots of Law, but in several places Chaos doth reign. :(

Post-It Note Piggy: how to fit a helmet on to a pork-chop's head?

Too much time being careful with maps (i.e. constrained creativity @Two orcs ) creates a pent up demand for chaos. I started out making a nice, polite, pencil sketch of the tree outside my window, and then...before I knew it, the ink pot sprung open and I was making a reckless splashing Super Black everwhere. This is all I could save (digitally) after the fugue-state subsided.

Something Wicked Hath Arrived

Some weird switch has flipped (again). I can't draw squat. Everything is fundamentally off.

Take a break. Work with some other medium. Maybe mess around some more with your CAD app?

Good advice.

Do you ever get in the funk where all the old pleasures fail to pique your interest? When every movie or TV show seems stale and hackney? You've got mountains of mundane work, but can't seem to marshal your energies to tackle any of it? Heck, when even food is not enticing and eating seems like a chore? Enthusiasm and gusto utterly gone.

I'm recovering from the flu. That may have something to do with it. Bio-chemical blues.

"Dysthymia", in my case.

Yeah. The BlowSR is doing that to me right now :( I miss the way it used to fire my imagination, now it just seems tired and/or bitter.
