Maybe a short lifespan? Even that just comes down to retailers' shelf space though. Then (as now, really), if you didn't pick a product up when you first saw it at the store, you ran a very real risk of never seeing it again. Even now, I occasionally flip through those Noble Knight TSR buy-lists and have my mind blown by the products I missed.
