Should I make commenting harder to combat SPAM?

I’m getting hit with spam blasts a couple of times a day. I’m updating my filters each time, but they keep coming. And sometimes I’m out of pocket and the spam in the comments sticks around until I get to it.

I could make commenting harder. I don’t know, captcha, or some kind of account requirement or blacklist subscription or something else. Or I could just leave it along and do what I’m doing now.

Please spam this post with comments on this. Do you give a shit? Do you have strong personal feelings about one solution or another?

And, please excuse the non-review post. I do try to not do that.

  • If you added a feature, like captcha or an account requirement, I would happily jump through that extra hoop, if it made your life a little easier. I do not have strong feelings. About anything. I might be a little dead inside. Ever since the incident. But you don't want to hear about that...

  • Bryce, thank you for all your hard work and for consistently entertaining and informing the OSR community.

We all know what spam is in this day and age. It's like barnacles, you have to scrape them off the hull every now and again. It's an extremely minor annoyance to your readers; I wouldn't worry about us.

Please just keep things the way they are. Don't let the spammers and the haters get you to change one God damn thing. You'll never please the haters. You'll never stop all the spam. They both can go to Hell.

  • A reCAPTCHA requirement sounds like an elegant solution. It would keep your forum open for easy commenting, simultaneously blocking most spam bots. I found instructions online for how to integrate reCAPTCHA into WordPress blogs for free. I'd bet other OSR bloggers have advice on how they handle spam.

  • I am very engaged with this blog and found you because i dont need a google account. The dont be evil mission of google is now a dodo bird and i fear for the future.

Thank you bryce for allowing me to be myself

Gabor and others i enjoy dont allow me to express myself in a way that respects me

I dont blame them for this but i love you for what you do

If you go for a capta maybe make it an easy one that is open source and vpn friendly?

I love you and coffee and bryce is now a treasured part of my life ilook forward too

Being free to comment in a way that i am comfortable with and engage with all the awesome folks looking to get better together?

    Thats so rare these days

  • I love not having hoops and think it makes this plave special

But spam sucks ans i hate you have yo deal with it

  • Instead of bothering with the technical hassles of implementing Captcha, you could present a simple challenge:

    "Are you Kent?" [yes|no]

  • I'm willing to deal with Captcha, signing in, any solution. The content is well worth any effort required to help alleviate the issue. Even if you take no steps, I'm going keep reading, so whatever works for you works for me!
